Song of the Week for Oct. 21st, 2012

Switching back to English songs temporarily…

“Chasm” by Flyleaf

When I used my brain to try to immediately think of a Flyleaf song, this was the one that came to mind. If I think for a few more seconds, I could think of a lot, so you will very likely see many more Flyleaf songs here in the future.

Flyleaf is more of a “heavy” band, so it was hard for me to get used to them. I think the lyrics are so good that it makes up for not being used to this kind of heavier music. Well…when I say “so good”, it can be hard to understand them fully. For a while, I didn’t realize that part of the song is directly taken from a Bible verse. I think there is a reference to an Old Testament verse, but the one I immediately found was in Luke 16:26. It talks about how is chasm is “fixed”, as it says in the ESV. It means that it is set in place, “in order that those who would pass from here to you would not be able…”

When the song talks about the chasm not being fixed yet, it is talking about it not yet being repaired. Can it be? The song seems to provide some hope, if you listen to the lyrics closely. The music video may also help a little bit, though it doesn’t feature any real life human characters. Definitely worth a listen.
