In an interesting move, Nintendo announced on Wednesday that they are dropping the price of the Wii again. It was previously $200 and included Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. For the first time, Nintendo is dropping the Wii bundled with Wii Sports. Consumers who want Wii Sports can still buy it separately, at a price of $20. Additionally, Nintendo is finally releasing a sort of “Player’s Choice” list of titles, with Zelda: Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing: City Folk and Mario Super Sluggers for $20 as well. None on that list that I want, but I would hope that they would add Mario Party 8 to that list. Seriously, that game’s been $50 forever. There’s rumors that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be added to that list, but that’s not been confirmed.
Additionally, the newly priced Wii at $150 will include Mario Kart Wii and a Wii Wheel. If you buy a black console, you’ll get a black Wii Wheel. I haven’t commented on Wii 2 yet, but of course I’ve read all of the rumors. With this official price drop, it seems that Nintendo could be ready for another console release. Could we see an early 2012 release of the Wii 2? Maybe. I am thinking end of 2012. But, at the same time, Nintendo is really slowing down game development for the Wii. As much potential as the Wii Motion Plus has, Nintendo is totally not utilizing it right now. Even with the new Wii Remote Plus, which includes the Motion Plus inside, Nintendo doesn’t seem to be releasing much of anything for the Wii, except for of course another Zelda game.
Where’s Pikmin 3? Where’s a new Star Fox game? What about a Pokemon RPG game of some sort? It’s getting kind of ridiculous. Well, with E3 just a month away, maybe we’ll see more about Nintendo’s plans soon enough.
