Song for Week of June 29th, 2008

Hmmm, well, I’m in Japan. What should this week’s song be?

“Defying Gravity” from Wicked Soundtrack

When you’re on an 11-hour plane ride, finding something to do to keep yourself entirely busy isn’t the easiest thing in the world. When I found out that one of the audio/radio channels that NWA had to offer featured Wicked, I felt pretty good. While I’ve never seen a live performance, my sister and a lot of my family are big fans. I have heard the music many times, therefore. While I probably prefer some of the other songs, like “What Is This Feeling?” and “Popular” for their personality, I like the transitions and depth of this song. This song is also fairly lengthy. On a side note, I noticed Wicked’s soundtrack features a ton of songs (I think 19), so it’s a big CD.

So, this is a pretty positive song and hopeful. It’s kind of interesting to hear some cliches during it, like “but until I try, I’ll never know.” Those kind of lines might seem obvious, or redundant. However, it’s a simple reminder of our abilities. Of course, we can never let media undermine Biblical truths as Christians. I can never hope to really accomplish anything outside of Christ. However, I think the Enemy will try to keep us from even trying certain things based on our being scared or shy from those things. So trying to defy gravity (metaphorically speaking) is a great thing to embrace, I think.
